Wedding in Deià!

27 May

In May  the Camerata Pollensinas performed at a wedding in Deià.  The guests,  Bride and Groom were from Germany and as you would expect in Deià it was as much a fashion show as anything else.

The music was wonderful although I would re consider using the church organ in future.  The tone is not a pleasant sound and that can not be changed.  Marcela the soprano was magnificent and the acoustics in the church perfect for her wonderful voice.

The drive there and back was a joy, I had forgotten how beautiful it is and how long it has been since I was last in the area.  We all went to the cafe/view point just out of Deià on the way home and thoroughly enjoyed an hour chatting, with the most wonderful view.

Sunny Days in Mallorca!

27 May

AS it did last year we seem to have missed out Spring weather wise.  Going from 15º to 25º overnight.  There is a mad panic to drag out summer clothes and wash them ready to wear.

The brave visitors with bare shoulders and legs and the locals hanging on to the winter clothes. The last two weeks though we all had to give in as the temp has been a steady 25º to 28º with clear blues skies.  It is also warmer in the evenings.

For sure the temperature feels like summer.  Sadly the numbers of tourists here does not.  Services in the choir next door have all been about the ascension and it is good to see how many use the church.  Already now the roof is finished and the holes on the front of the church repaired the inside smells less damp. A good dry spell should help a lot.

“Obras” en la Plaza!

19 May

it was really exciting last week when they finally took all the scaffolding down from the church in torrential rain…   At last the town centre can look lovely again. Then the very next day we got this:-

Last year he had banners complainging of 75 years of injustice.  Looks like it worked.

Ash and more Ash

12 May

Ok!  Someone up there must be playing games…..

We are just hitting rock bottom in the biggest financial crisis Spain has seen! We are  now at the end of a financially ruinous winter!  Then, just as the tourist season starts and all looks hopeful as bookings are up and Germany and England are turning the recession corner, we get

” Volcanic  ASH ” !!!!

Is this a joke?

Sun in ‘La Plaza’

10 Apr

Having arrived at the shop early this morning there was time to sit outside Café Español and partake of a coffee and danish pastry, or caracol as they are called here.   It was one of those perfect moments with the sun shining, a few people milling around and that wonderful calm that can only be experienced in the early mornings.

At the next table sat Marga, an elderly lady who I see every day,  going for her regular walk around the village. She can often be seen sitting outside the cafe and rarely has a drink,   for she doesn’t have the money to buy.   She loves to chat although it can be a challenge to follow her every word.  This morning as I read my book and drank coffee I could hear her singing to herself some lovely Spanish tune, happy in her world, watching the goings on in the square.

Her Husband died last year and she often tells me how wonderful it is to be alive.  She was married for over 50 years and came here from the mainland as a young bride.  Imagine how that must have been for her.  Only knowing her new husband in such a closely knit community and so far from home.
