The Island of Mallorca

or is it Majorca?

To be honest, it is both, although Mallorca is the more commonly used form.  Everything here has two names:  the Spanish and the Mallorquin.  The two languages are generally spoken however you will hear Mallorquin more in the inner towns and villages and all road signs are in Mallorquin.

Steeped in history, this island has far more to offer than magnificent white sandy beaches and endless hours of sunshine.  The first people stepped on to this island over 6,000 years ago, settling into the wondrous caves that can be found all around the island.  To really appreciate the islands dramatic history I strongly advise looking for a guided tour either in the towns you visit or an island tour.  Choose tours that have fewer numbers and smaller coaches as they are more enjoyable and friendly.

Learn about the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, the Vandals, Moors and the Spanish who all visited and /or invaded the island.  Learn of the effect each nationality had on the culture and development of the Island and it's culture.  This will make each visit to a town, church or castle so much more interesting.

Do try the local cuisine, each area has it's own version of the traditional dishes such as Frito Mallorquin and Arroz Brut - move away from the tourist areas and venture into the little restaurants inland.  The Mallorquin people are friendly by nature, all you have to do is smile and say hello.  The true Mallorquin cuisine reminds me of the best farmhouse meals.  The soups are a meal in themselves and delicious.  The local bread has to be eaten in a special way to fully be appreciated and you have not met Mallorca if you have not tried 'Pan Boli' or 'Allioli'.  Lamb is a specialty: make sure you are hungry.

Options of travel to Mallorca.

Traveling to the island of Mallorca couldn't be easier. Scheduled flights at reasonable fares are available form airports all over Europe to Palma de Mallorca, the islands airport. Within 40 minutes of landing you are in your holiday villa and beginning to relax. With the new road now from Palma de Mallorca to the old town of Alcudia  the journey is quick and easy.

The Jewel of the Mediterranean

Things to do in Mallorca for that special holiday in Summer or Winter.

Outdoor pursuits are in abundance here depending on your choice of activity.

Golf

There are excellent golf courses around the island the two closest to the holiday villa and apartment are: the new 18 hole course at Alcanada and a  9 hole course in Pollensa

Walking

The mountains and surrounding areas have many marked walks and treks with picnic areas in the more accessible parts and dramatic scenery for the more adventurous.  From Capella apartment you can walk through the bocca valley or over to Cala San Vicente.  From the villa in Bonaire (es Mal Pas) you are already on the peninsular of Victoria, so just walk out of the villa and choose your route.  The drive to Lluc monastery through the mountains has breathtaking views and excellent walks of all levels can be enjoyed with a well earned lunch or dinner in the monasteries restaurant when you have finished.

Water sports

Windsurfing, sailing, scuba diving and canoeing are all within walking distance of the apartment and the villa. Equipment can be hired and training courses are available.

Cycling

Professionals use Mallorca quite often and the cycling clubs train on the island in the off season to benefit from the varied terrain and temperate weather.

Leisure cycling is also perfect here for there are many flat areas to enjoy. For example the ride from Puerto Pollensa to Alcudia town is flat and skirts the bay of Pollensa.  It is also an easy ride as far as the Port of Alcudia or Alcudia resort. There are several bike hire companies with various prices depending on your requirements. There is even a professional bike hire for the serious riders who prefer not to put their own bike on the plane.

Bird watching

The bays of Pollensa and Alcudia are also favourites for bird watchers due to the protected areas and migration routes.  The Albeferra between Alcudia and Can Picafort is a nature park and special hides can be booked for the serious birders.

List of activities:

Golf - Walking - Trekking - Climbing - Bird watching - Sailing - Windsurfing - Scuba diving - Relaxing - Theatre - Classical concerts - Opera - Art - Jazz - Health and well being  -  Spars - Squash - Tennis - Mountain climbing and I am sure there are many that I have not though of.

Spring & autumn

The temperate weather makes the island the perfect location for activity holidays, or for those who enjoy exploring the special experiences that the true Mallorca has to offer. This is a more quiet time of year, yet the restaurants and summer businesses are still open, allowing the visitor more space and opportunities to meet the locals in a more relaxed mood. Flowers are in abundance and the markets full of locally grown produce.

Winter

The weather in winter is mild and wet. It is the quiet period for tourism, yet good for entertainment with many festivals, particularly in January. Many businesses are closed at this time of year and the beaches are as nature intended with the parasols and sun beds removed. The end of winter is one of the most beautiful times in Mallorca as almond trees are blossoming and the valleys become a sea of pink and white. For those wanting peace and tranquility, this is the time to visit Mallorca
